Anxiety on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale decreased 33.5 percent against 13.1 percent.
Four factors limit how far that result applies. The trial was sponsored by the company that manufactures the product, and several authors work in its research department. Participants ingested capsules rather than consuming a brewed cup. Anyone consuming more than three cups of coffee a day was excluded from enrolment. And a 5.5 percent shift in serum cortisol remains small, against a normal morning's 50 to 160 percent swing on its own.
Reishi's own trial record indicates the opposite effect. Chu and colleagues published the contrasting result in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2011.
